In the Garden

The garden landscaping is the vision and work of landscaper Kathy Kloss (right in the hate, with Debbie Wells) from Pittsboro, NC and her crew.

Gaillardia commonly known as Blanket Flower, on the island we call them Joe Bell's. Native to North & South America, member of the Asteraceae family.

Hedychium coronarium, commonly known as White Butterfly Ginger, White Hawaiian Ginger, or White Ginger Lily. A perennial flowering plant in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Grows well in warm temperate & subtropical regions. Native to Asia.

Lantana is a perennial flowering plant in the verbena family, Verbenaceae. Native to tropical regions of the Americas. Great for pollinators!

Azalea; flowering shrub in the Rhododendron genus. Part of the Ericaeae family. Shade tolerant, prefer living under larger trees.

Ilex vomitoria pendula, commonly called Weeping Yaupon Holly. This a a cultivar of the native yaupon holly plants in the Aquifoliaceae family. CAUTION: Yaupon is a toxic plant!

Rudbeckia hirta, aka Black-Eyed Susan. Native to North America, it is a flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. native to eastern & central North America.

Cuphea vermillionaire, commonly called cuphea, or cigar plant. A perennial flowering plant in the Lythraceae family. Rich in nectar, pollinators love them!

Canna Lily is the only genus in the Cannaceae family. All genus's are native to the American Tropics, but have naturalized in Europe, India, & Africa. Not a true lily, but instead belong to the Zingiberales order of plants, being closely related to gingers, bananas & birds of paradise.

Hippeastrum aka Red Lion Amaryllis. This tropical bulbous plant is native tropical & subtropical regions of the Americas. A member of the Amaryllidaceae family & are tunicate, meaning they have a dry outer layer on their bulb.

Hosta, commonly known as Plantain Lilies. Shade loving foliage plant in the Asparagaceae family. Native to northeast Asia.

Pinus thunbergii aka Japanese Black Pine. Native to coastal areas of Japan. Very salt tolerant. Member of the Pinaceae family.

Hydrangea macrophylla, aka Lacecap Hydrangea. This variety blooms on old wood, so be careful when pruning if you want good blooms.

Callistemon aka Bottlebrush Bush. A genus of flowering shrub in the Myrtaceae family. The entire genus is endemic to Australia, but has been widely cultivated in many other regions of the world.

Cycas revoluta aka Sago Palm. This is a species of gymnosperm in the Cycadaceae family. Don't be fooled by the common name, this ornamental is NOT in fact a palm, it just looks like one.
